Free things to do in Barcelona, Spain

1.  Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

The Magic Fountain was one of the first things we crossed off of our bucket list when we arrived in Barcelona. The Magic Fountain puts on a performance that includes color, motion, light, and music. There are daily performances that start at either 8:00 p.m. (20:00) or 9:00 p.m. (21:00) depending on the time of the year. I would suggest arriving at east 2-3 hours beforehand to ensure that you have a good spot to watch the show. If you want to see the show up close then I highly suggest you wear a rain jacket as you will get soaked by the end of the show.

If you do arrive right before 8pm or even after the show has started then I would suggest making your way to the front in order to really be able to enjoy the show. I did get a good amount of water on me but it was totally worth it. The fountain is located in front of the National Museum of of Art of Catalunya (MNAC). If you are planning on attending the museum then I would suggest to go around 3pm or 4pm and that way you will make it in time for the Magic Fountain show. There are a lot of great places to take pictures during the day if you are trying to kill time for the show. Below are a couple of pictures that we took during the day:

2. Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas is a series of tree-lined shopping streets that is well known for it's street performers, architectural buildings and shopping stands. This is a main tourist attraction as the majority of the shopping tents sell unique and hand-made artifacts that include, soap, shoes, bags, ceramic tiles, paintings, and much more. The street performers were my favorite to watch as it reminded me of my time in Poland. You really only need about 30-45 min to explore all of Las Ramblas so it would be a good idea to head there in the morning around 10am or 11 am and then make your way to Barceloneta Beach for a swim.

3. Barceloneta Beach

There is something so peaceful about walking along the beach and it not being too crowded or hot. I can't say that this was the best beach I had ever been too, but I can say that it was definitely worth going to. There a lot of shopping stores that you can shop at while at the beach as well as restaurants that serve Paella. Getting to the beach was quite easy as you can arrive by train or bus. The beach is a great way to kick back and relax when you want a break from walking all over Barcelona.

4. Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter)

The Gothic Quarter is filled with so much history and charm. Walking throughout the medieval streets is great if you are doing a walking tour as you get to learn a lot of interesting facts that you wouldn't have known about if you were roaming the quarter by yourself. Make sure to keep an eye out for the gargoyles and the famous steps that Christopher Walker walked up on. There are many landmarks that can be seen when walking through the gothic quarter such as the Roman ruins, roman and medieval walls, many churches, placa real, etc.

5. SANDEMAN's Free Barcelona Tour

If you take away anything from thus blog then I would highly suggest booking a free walking tour with SANDEMAN! Sandeman offers daily free walking tours throughout the day and is totally free. You can check them out here and plan your tour according to your schedule. I would suggest carrying some cash as tipping is optional at the end of the tour. The amount of information you receive as well as the many jokes that the tour guide tells is worth it. The great thing about this tour is that you have the option of choosing the tour either in Spanish or English.

I hope you enjoyed reading all about the free attractions that Barcelona has to offer. I am sure there are a lot more things you can do for free but these were the things I did as I was only there for about two and a half days. I will be blogging about food in Barcelona next!
